TECHMAN [Jul. 4th, 2008|10:59 am]

[smuu]

A commission for my brother, for a friend of his, who, as the picture indicates, is a stage tech superhero, righting the wrongs of bad theatre lighting across Canada. haha. I think a play that had a punk, a princess and a rabbit in it would be a cool play.

Some of you who pay attention to my shenanigans know in your mind that Sharknife Double Z has been a love / hate labor of love and pain for me to create, yes?

There are a few reasons for that. Working in the long-form OGN format is one. My own frequent lack of focus is another big one. But also, I think it has something to do with the impact of such a titular character. Sharknife is daunting. You can't really half-ass anything about it. It has a simple core, but it's also quite complex. I'm representing a lot with this book. As is anyone making a graphic novel worth a damn. For me though, I feel I'm still learning a lot about comics.

And, struggling with such an important book, missing solicits, deadlines, taking on other projects, etc, is not the best way to have a stunning career, or fix problems. But it's the way I'm handling my shit. So bare with me (all who care). I've done a lot of stuff wrong the last few years, but that makes the lessons learned all the more sticking.

I'm happy right now with the progress being made. I made a couple crucial discoveries the last couple days (content for the beginning and end of the book) that take it to a new level, and motivate me much more than originally planned. I also get bored of drawing fights all the time, so the new discoveries I've made will hopefully freshen things up quite a lot, and in the end, turn this book from just a simple "next step", to something really meaningful (to me, at least).

So the old LJ will be more active again. I've started cross-posting from my kris dresen draws blog. Because, really, you can't be in too many places at once.

God help me, but I am monkeying around with Twitter. I know, I know…but it intrigues me for some reason. I usually only post when I’m working on comics and whatnot. I’ll also post when new comics and Grace updates are up, too. So if you’re really interested in the minutia of my existence then, by all means:

Okay, folks. I'm stalled out on a personal design project, so I am turning to you, my twitchy-eyed readership, to give me a free-association leg up. Ready? Fight! (And feel free to answer in comments instead of the poll form, if you prefer.)

What is an image you associate with my work? (Not necessarily one I've specifically created - "old books" is an example.)

Dear god, WHY?

I saw on the SG boards that Flux is leaving. Doesn't look like there's any drama which isn't surprising since she was never a part of the drama. Sean said she was the biggest loss ever for the site. I don't know about that but she was an interesting and bright lady who was a big positive for the site. I wish her the best of luck.

Ability to finish a drawing: GONE. [Jul. 2nd, 2008|11:08 am]

conga_chili

Some sketches from the past little while... )
Also a few updates to the website, namely on the art & sequential pages. Made a rough storyboard for a promo of my show, it's the first one right here. Movement's ok but very stationary camera angles so it's a little boring in that sense. Ah well. Boarding's still the funnest.

Thankfully the unbearable heat has subsided and now it's just normal heat. My digital photo studio (ie computer) is in the attic and it has been impossibly hot up there so no work has been done on any of my recent shoots and I am getting that panicky falling behind feeling. Self imposed deadlines will be the death of me. Add to that an out of town visit from my mother-in-law starting tomorrow coupled with an out of town trip for the 4th - ugh, time thine art mine enemy.

I find myself working on another nude series, the gist of which will become apparent to you the viewer after a couple of posts. Perhaps distracting myself with artistic nude projects is not the best idea when launching into a photography career meant to support my family but eh, I go with what flows. I keep looking loningly at all the fruits and veggies I have been cutting up and thinking what pretty pictures they would make. Soon, soon...

How is it already July? My husband is obsessively working away in his art cave building things to blow up for the 4th in what we have decided must now be a yearly tradition. One of the pieces is amazing, it pains me to see it blown up, but at the same time it will be a spectacular burn.

Happy 4th, see you in a week.

Oh Canada Day [Jul. 1st, 2008|05:28 pm]

smuu
Happy Canada Day everyone! I celebrated by acquiring my first sunburn of the season (FUCK!) and viewing well dressed men in uniform parading in the hot sun. I wore red and white socks, and bought a muffin at Tim Hortons, Canada's Most Patriotic Coffeeshop Ever! Tonight: Fireworks!

And while shuffling around with friends, waiting for the parade to start, I realized that I was a bad little Canadian girl and couldn't quite remember ... well ... "what is it exactly that we are celebrating on this day, this Canada Day?" No one could come up with a definite answer, but the general consensus was that it was some sort of signing, and was probably done in PEI, but beyond that we were stumped. Eventually we stumbled on other friends and they, having paid much more attention in history class, informed us that "the occasion marks the joining of the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867." (Thanks, Wikipedia!) Of course, we didn't actually totally declare independence until 1982, which makes for a slightly shameful slogan: "Canada: Totally Not the Queen's Bitch For Almost Thirty Years! Except We Kinda Still Are. Sort Of." (Because I am a loser Brit-o-phile, I generally approve of our British overlords and would like to completely appropriate their slang. Also their excellent television programming.)

July 1st also marks my third year in Halifax, and my fourth year in the Maritimes. Originally I moved to PEI for a three month contract, and look what happened. There are many things I miss about Ontario (family, my friend Chris, Toronto's excellent shopping and tolerance), but I like it here. Except when I get sunburnt. Dammit.

It's amazing how thoroughly the heat zaps away my energy. I have been a complete cranky jerk ever since the heat wave started. Wait, is it really a heat wave? Or is this just Typical Summer Temperature and I'm being a big dramatic baby about it?

Prooooobably the latter.

But! It's so pretty out!
Ladies Workin

I just need to suck up my heat-induced bad mood and drink more water.

And maybe eat some strawberries.
